    What Is Hypervigilance?

Hypervigilance is being constantly on guard — scanning rooms, jumping at noises, reading faces for danger. It's the nervous system doing its job too well after it learned that the world wasn't safe.

    What it can feel like

    • Difficulty relaxing or sleeping.
    • Sitting where you can see the exit.
    • Being startled easily and feeling tired from being "on" all the time.

    Helping the body stand down

Your body needs repeated experiences of safety, not just reassurance. Slow out-breaths, orienting to your surroundings and grounding through the senses all send the message: right here, right now, I am safe enough.
