    The Power of Compassion

Compassion is noticing suffering and wanting to ease it. When we offer it — to others or to ourselves — the body shifts out of threat and towards safety and connection.

    Why it works

Researchers describe three emotion systems: threat, drive and soothing. Many of us live mostly in threat and drive. Compassion strengthens the soothing system, which helps slow the heart, soften the breath and make room to think clearly.

    Compassion isn't weakness

    • It isn't letting yourself off the hook — it makes it easier to take responsibility without collapsing into shame.
    • It isn't self-pity — it recognises that struggle is part of being human.
    • It takes courage to turn towards pain rather than away from it.
