People-Pleasing & the Fawn Response
Alongside fight, flight and freeze, many people have a fourth survival response: fawn. It means staying safe by keeping others happy — agreeing, apologising and putting your needs last.
Where it comes from
Fawning often develops when, as a child, keeping the peace was the safest option. It was clever and protective then — but in adulthood it can leave you exhausted, resentful and unsure what you actually want.
Small steps
- Pause before saying yes: "Let me get back to you."
- Notice your body's response to a request — tension can be a quiet "no".
- Practise small boundaries in low-stakes situations first.
