Loneliness & Connection
Loneliness is the painful gap between the connection we have and the connection we need. You can feel lonely in a crowd, or perfectly content alone — it's about feeling understood, not how many people are around.
Why it hurts
Humans are wired for belonging, so the brain treats disconnection as a threat. Long-term loneliness can make us more watchful of rejection, which can make reaching out feel even harder.
Small ways back
- Start small: a smile, a short message, a question to a neighbour.
- Connection can come from shared activities — groups, volunteering, classes.
- Pets, nature and music offer real co-regulation too.
